Carter on Carter



The first film in a new series of interviews with Elliott Carter(New York, 1908 - New York, 2012) charts his early years in New York, at Harvard University and studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Filmed at his Manhattan apartment in June 2010 the interview is combined with music including Holiday Overture, Symphony No.1 and String Quartet No.1.

The second, filmed at his Manhattan apartment in 2010, focuses on two major scores, the Symphony of Three Orchestras and his opera What Next?

The third and final film, filmed at his Manhattan apartment in 2010, explores his creative motivations as a composer. The 102-year-old composer reflects on setting the words of poets and remembers student days with Gustav Holst.

The Carter on Carter web documentaries are presented by Boosey & Hawkes and directed by Tommy Pearson of Red Ted Films.

Harry Partch (Oakland, 1901 - Encinitas, 1974) was an American composer, music theorist, and creator of musical instruments. He was one of the first 20th-century composers in the West to work systematically with microtonal scales. He built custom-made instruments in these tunings on which to play his compositions, and described his theory and practice in his book Genesis of a Music (1947 and 1974).
